Why your website needs maintenance (even when it is finished)

7 October 2025

Your website is finished, it is online and it looks good. Done, you would think. But a website is not a brochure you print once. It runs on software that keeps changing, on a server that gets updated, and it is reachable day and night, including by people with bad intentions.

That is why every website needs maintenance. Here is what that means in practice.

1. Updates for WordPress, theme and plugins

WordPress, your theme and your plugins get updates regularly. Often they are small improvements, but regularly they close a security hole. The vast majority of security holes in WordPress are not in WordPress itself, but in plugins. So updating is necessary, but with care: test after an update that everything still works, and make sure you can go back if something goes wrong.

2. Your server’s PHP version

Your website runs on PHP, and that software has a best-before date too. PHP 8.1, for example, has had no security updates since 1 January 2026, and PHP 8.2 follows after 31 December 2026. Hosting companies switch old versions off over time. If your website is not ready for that, it can show an error from one day to the next.

3. Backups you can actually restore

A good backup is made automatically, is not only stored on the same server as your website and is tested now and then. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a certainty.

4. Checking that everything still works

After updates or a change at your host, something can quietly break: a contact form that no longer sends mail, a payment that does not go through, a page that jumps around. Visitors rarely report it. They simply go to a competitor.

5. Domain name, certificate and email

Your domain name and your SSL certificate (the padlock in the address bar) have to be renewed on time. Forget it, and your site is unreachable or visitors see a warning. The settings that keep your mail out of spam also deserve a check now and then.

6. Keeping an eye on speed and uptime

With monitoring you know within minutes that your site is down, instead of a few days later through a customer. And if you track speed, you see straight away when a new plugin or image slows your site down.

What does doing nothing cost?

Maintenance costs time or money, that is true. But cleaning up a hacked website, repairing a site that stopped working after an update, or missing customers because your form was broken for weeks almost always costs more. Maintenance is not a luxury, it is the insurance on your investment.

Do it yourself or outsource it?

You can do a lot yourself, if you take the time and know what to look for. Rather not? Then take a look at our maintenance plans. We keep your site up to date, secure and fast, so you can focus on your customers.
